Local Area Information - Aberdeen
Aberdeen is situated in the north east of Scotland and is known as the Oil Capital of Europe. The City has a population of around 250,000 and has excellent facilities such as shopping, local transport, air links to major cities in the UK and to Europe, schools, local and international, as well as a quality of life no longer available in many other locations. There are properties to rent from Flats to Grand houses and apertments. Many major oil companies have their European headquarters in the city and there are abundant oil support companies that supply the offshore industry including both shipping and air ferry services.
Due to the oil the city has a very cosmopolitan population yet at the same time remains very Scottish. Local residents are warm hearted friendly and outgoing they tend to blend well with the many incomers from around the world, many of whom have chosen to settle after the end of initial contracts.
The City is also known as the Silver City, because of the sparkle, on sunny days, which comes from the local granite building material from which a majority of the cities structures are built. It is also known as the Granite City, for obvious reasons. The beach area is scenic with a long sandy coastline though swimming is only for the hardy due to the low temperature of the North Sea. There is an all year round fun fair and many other leisure activities including restaurants, cinemas, ice rink, cafes and bars, there is also a massive retail park under construction in this area. The city centre has an abundance of both local and national retailers, as well as restaurants, theatres, shopping malls, main line rail station, national bus terminal, nightclubs and bars.
Renting is available at all levels with prices ranging from around £30,000 for a small city centre flat to hundreds of thousands for many of the fine Victorian mansions within the city and more modern residences in the many residential suburban areas. Aberdeen is also surrounded by some of Scotland's most beautiful and scenic country side where herds of wild deer can be seen wandering the hills and mountain sides.
Schooling is generally accepted to be of a very high standard in both the public and private sector, the city also boasts two fine universities, one of which dates from the 12th century.
